Portrait of Pietros Maneos, oil on canvas, 42 x 36 inches
Many of you know the wonderful quote: “Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it.” Roughly attributed to George Santayana. That thought was running through my mind in doing this portrait of my friend, poet, Pietros Maneos. As well as these queries: are not the successes of artworks through history worth studying? Not to copy them, but learn from the best and grow into a better future?
Pietros is known for his epic 164-page poem, American Bards & The London Reviewer: A Satire. The golden age of Classical Greece heavily influences him, but it seems that he is a bridge starting from the great artworks of the past and ending somewhere in a future filled with beautiful, authentic, and meaningful art.
